Whoa there, big boy! Windows Phone 7 isn’t even powering a real smartphone yet, and we already have a tablet concept based on the platform, created by designer Umang Dokey.

It’s a sexy-looking beast, with an 8” screen, two joysticks on the back and a built-in stand that turns it into a coffee table-style PC. The designer has also envisioned 3D video calls and a keyboard built into the stand, but let’s not get too excited about it all yet: It’s just a concept, very far from being an actual product.

Intel's Core i7-980X Extreme Edition

Six cores. Twelve threads. A new flagship processor in Intel's stable. Here at GDC in San Francisco, the world's most widely recognized chip maker is dishing out its latest desktop CPU, and to say it's a niche device would be greatly understating things. We spoke to a number of Intel bigwigs at tonight's media event, and everyone confessed that the Core i7-980X Extreme Edition was a low quantity, high performance device aimed specifically at gamers and content editors that simply refuse to live anywhere other than on the cutting edge.

Intel's planning on selling these in retail, standalone form for $999 (MSRP), while they'll soon be available in a variety of gaming rigs from the likes of Dell, Alienware and whoever else wishes to keep with the times. As for Apple? The company stated that Steve and Company "sort of call their own shots," and that we'd have to dig at Apple if we really wanted to know what their refreshed Mac Pro would hold. We chuckled, nodded in understanding, and then learned that this here slab of silicon is a bit ahead of the software out there, with Intel noting that only games optimized for 12-thread use and benchmarking utilities that did likewise would really demonstrate the performance boost.

'Course, anyone who spends a great deal of time multitasking will appreciate the extra headroom, and power users can always find ways to make use of more horsepower. Oh, and for what it's worth, the company stated that this will be its lead desktop chip for some time to come, and if you're looking for a mobile version in the near future, you can keep dreaming.

Microsoft Outlook to Add MySpace

Microsoft Outlook has just become a lot more social through new partnerships with Facebook and MySpace and an existing one with LinkedIn.

You might remember back in November that Microsoft announced Outlook Social Connector, a new Office 2010 feature that hooks up social feeds into the Outlook inbox. The initial partner for the program was LinkedIn, whose business connections, alerts and messages would integrate directly with Outlook.

Now that integration has gone live. Outlook users can now download LinkedIn for Outlook and transform their desktop inboxes into a hub for all things LinkedIn.

Overshadowing its release is Microsoft’s announcement of two big partners for the Outlook Social Connector, MySpace and Facebook. Sometime in the next few months, users will be able to check up on their MySpace friends, update their Facebook status and browse through photos.

T-Mobile's HTC HD2

Android Gets Official Google Buzz Widget

Google has released the Google Buzz widget for Android, which will make updating your status or tagging your location easier.

Google first launched Google Buzz for mobile about six weeks ago, and while the overall Buzz platform has undergone some changes and refinements, the mobile aspect of the service hasn’t really changed — until now.

One of my favorite Android features is that certain programs will let you use home screen widgets for easy access. This is most useful in a search or a social context — which is why having a widget for Google Buzz makes total sense.

The widget is only available in English right now, and it requires at least Android 1.6. Search “Google Buzz” in the Android Market to download the app. Once it’s downloaded, it can be added to your home screen the same way you add any other widget — click on your home screen menu, click on “add” select “widgets” and then select the option for Google Buzz.

Magento Scores $22.5 Million For Open Source E-commerce

According to a regulatory filing, LA-based Magento Commerce, which develops an open source e-commerce software suite, has recently received a $22.5 million capital injection in an equity funding round.

Magento was originally a product developed and marketed by Varien, a 9-year old company that also delivers e-commerce business consulting and other services, but has now effectively been incorporated as a stand-alone venture. It’s unclear whether the financing of Magento comes from Varien, or if the latter company’s existing and / or other investors have stepped in to provide funding. Either way, the company says it concerns ‘fresh’ cash.

If I were to venture a guess, I would say PayPal plays a part in this story – from what I can gather the least you can say is that the digital payment company has a deep partnershipwith Magento that spans both co-marketing of their respective services as well as a collaboration on a product development level.

I had a brief chat with Tim Schulz, the former MySpace product manager who recently became Magento’s Senior Product Manager, who told me they’re positioning the Magento Commerce solution right in the center of various growth areas in electronic commerce and that its goal is to become the provider of the single largest e-commerce platform in the world. Bonus points for showcasing some ambition.

Magento currently has over 60,000 merchants using its software, which was downloaded about 1.5 million times as of January 2010. The company also says they’ve registered over $15 billion in transactions to date. The roadmap for the future is apparently paved with additional products, with a number of “Mobile Commerce, Saas offering and other products/services” coming later this year.

AVG and LimeWire Join Hands for Your Security

AVG Technologies is the company that specializes in providing antivirus and internet security protection to home and business users – the company is better known for its very popular free antivirus solution AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 9.0. LimeWire is the company behind the popular P2P (peer-to-peer) file sharing client, that works on computers powered by Microsoft’s Windows operating system, Apple’s Mac OS X, or Linux.

AVG Technologies and LimeWire announced that they joined hands to provide an enhanced level of security to the computer user. LimeWire’s premium product, LimeWire Pro now comes with AVG Anti-Virus protection. Thanks to the properly good virus protection provided by AVG’s antivirus solution, LimeWire Pro user can now download data safe in the knowledge that AVG will detect and remove.

LimeWire licensed the AVG Anti-Virus SDK (Software Development Kit) engine and integrated it into LimeWire Pro, thus providing antivirus and antispyware protection to LimeWire Pro customers. Before LimeWire Pro allows any file to be played or executed, said file is scanned by AVG’s security solution.

Google 99% Ready to Pull Out of China

The Google-China story is getting close to an end – or so it seems. You might remember that back in January Google announced its corporate infrastructure was targeted by a “highly sophisticated” attack that originated from China. After the attack, Google decided that enough is enough and that unless they are allowed to stop censoring search results on Google.cn, then Google would have to “review the feasibility of [its] business operations in China” – which is a fancy way of saying they will pack up and go.

As a little side note, after the attack it came out that a security hole in Microsoft’s Internet Explorer was one of the vectors used in the attack (seehere). Also after the attack, Microsoft said it condemns the attack, but cannot support Google’s decision to pull out of China (see here).

After lengthy negotiations with the Chinese authorities, a stalemate has been reached. Google continues to stand behind its decision to stop censoring search results in China, and if that is not the option, it is prepared to leave the country. The Chinese authorities stand behind the law and warn Google that it will have to bear the consequences if it violates China’s laws and regulations – laws and regulations that state search results must be censored.

According to the Financial Times, Google has drawn up plans to close Google.cn and is “99.9 percent” certain to shut the Chinese search engine down. The newspaper said it obtained this information from a person familiar with Google’s inner workings. This person said that a decision on whether to shut down Google.cn could be made very soon, but Google may take some time in following through with its plans. Google would have to go through an orderly closure of its operations in China to protect local employees from retaliation from the local authorities.

Some of Google’s biggest web partners have been advised to prepare for the eventuality that Google.cn might cease activity. Advertisers are advised to move to rival search engines – like Baidu, the biggest search engine in China. - Findmysoft

IE8: Safest Browser in the Internet Explorer Range

Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) is the latest iteration of the Microsoft-developed web browser. It has more features than IE6 and IE7, it is faster than IE6 and IE7, and it is definitely safer to use than IE6 and IE7. Why just the other day Microsoft announced it is aware of a new vulnerability that could allow for remote code execution should someone be able to exploit it. Microsoft releasedSecurity Advisory 981374 to provide its customers guidance on how to stay protected. A video demo on how the vulnereability works is available here(PandaLabs blog).

The good news is that only Internet Explore 6 and Internet Explorer 7 are affected by this recent vulnerability. The latest version, Internet Explorer 8, is not affected. If you want to stay safe and protected, then you are well advised to leave those older versions of IE behind (especially IE6) and switch to Internet Explorer 8. IE6 in particular should be left behind because as of this month YouTube no longer supports it, nor do Google Docs and Google Sites services. Not to mention that if you’re still on IE6, you’re not getting the most out of Yahoo! Mail.

“The vulnerability exists due to an invalid pointer reference being used within Internet Explorer. It is possible under certain conditions for the invalid pointer to be accessed after an object is deleted. In a specially-crafted attack, in attempting to access a freed object, Internet Explorer can be caused to allow remote code execution. Our investigation so far has shown that Internet Explorer 8 and Internet Explorer 5.01 Service Pack 4 on Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 are not affected, and that Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 on Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4, and Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Explorer 7 are vulnerable,” explained Microsoft in the security advisory. -Findmysoft

Foursquare Shatters Its Check-In Record

The official Foursquare account just sent out a tweet letting everyone know that today is already the service’s biggest day ever. This is interesting since it’s actually the day beforethe SXSW conference kicks off in Austin, Texas.

According to the tweet, Foursquare broke 275,000 check-ins (the previous record, set last Friday) for the day “hours ago.” This means they’re very likely well past 300,000 now and perhaps even higher. To put that in some perspective, just a month ago, Foursquare set a record with 1.2 million check-ins for the entire week. And that was double was it was the month prior. At today’s rate, Foursquare would be doing well over 2 million check-ins a week.

Today happens to be the first birthday of Foursquare, so they shared some numbers earlier. The service now has over 500,000 users, they’ve given out over 1 million badges, there are over 1.4 million venues in the system, with over 1,200 specials available. And in total, there have been some 15.5 million check-ins. But that was before today’s record numbers.

While there are well over a dozen location-based services launching something at SXSW, the main two competitors vying for users’ time are expected to be Foursquare and Austin-nativeGowalla. For its part, Gowalla noted that it was “Amazing to watch the Gowalla action on the eve of SXSW. AMAAAAAAZING!,” earlier today. Both recently revamped their websites, and both yesterday launched their new iPhone apps. And judging from the Vicarious.ly dataprovided by SimpleGeo, both are absolutely on fire right now and could go nuclear this weekend.

Motorola to add Microsoft’s Bing to smart phones

Motorola Inc. said Thursday that it will add Microsoft Corp.’s Bing search and map functions to its smart phones that use Google Inc.’s Android operating software.

Motorola said it start by rolling out the services on smart phones in China this quarter.

The company will include a Bing bookmark on the phones’ mobile browsers and a new search “widget,” or mini application, that includes Bing.

Financial details of the agreement with Microsoft were not disclosed.

Barnes & Noble to Launch E-Reader App for iPad

Continuing with a very source agnostic digital book strategy, Barnes & Noble has announced it will soon be offering an e-reader app for the Apple iPad.

The app will be designed specifically for the iPad’s tablet form factor, and will join B&N’s existing e-reader app family already available for Mac, PC, iPhone , iPod touch, and BlackBerry.

In other words, although the company is selling its own Nook e-reader device, it doesn’t want to lock potential book customers into a single platform or device. The company says that the goal is “providing consumers any book, anytime, anywhere.”

Like the other existing apps, the iPad app will give users access to the Barnes & Noble e-bookstore with more than one million e-books, magazines and newspapers, plus access of course to its existing digital library. The company expects to officially launch the app around the same time the iPad will be available, which should be April 3 if the existing rumor has any truth to it.

A motherboard is the central printed circuit board (PCB) in some complex electronic systems, such as modern personal computers. The motherboard is sometimes alternatively known as the mainboard, system board, or, on Apple computers, the logic board. It is also sometimes casually shortened to mobo.

Motherboards contain some non-volatile memory to initialize the system and load an operating system from some external peripheral device. Microcomputers such as the Apple II and IBM PC used read-only memory chips, mounted in sockets on the motherboard. At power-up, the central processor would load its program counter with the address of the boot ROM, and start executing ROM instructions, displaying system information on the screen and running memory checks, which would in turn start loading memory from an external or peripheral device (disk drive). If none is available, then the computer can perform tasks from other memory stores or display an error message, depending on the model and design of the computer and version of the BIOS.

Most modern motherboard designs use a BIOS, stored in an EEPROM chip soldered to the motherboard, to bootstrap the motherboard. (Socketed BIOS chips are widely used, also.) By booting the motherboard, the memory, circuitry, and peripherals are tested and configured. This process is known as a computer Power-On Self Test (POST) and may include testing some of the following devices: floppy drive, network controller, CD-ROM drive, DVD-ROM drive, SCSI hard drive, IDE, EIDE, or SATA hard drive, External USB memory storage device.

Basic Input/Output System is the program which starts up your computer and communicates between the devices in your computer (such as your hard drive and graphics card) and the system. BIOS is normally stored in an EPROM chip (Eraseable Programmable Read Only Memory).

The BIOS is one of the first things that happens when you turn your computer on. The BIOS introduces the core components (Hard drive, Motherboard, Processor, Memory etc) to each other.

BIOS (basic input/output system) is the program a personal computer's microprocessor uses to get the computer system started after you turn it on. It also manages data flow between the computer's operating system and attached devices such as the hard disk , video adapter , keyboard , mouse , and printer .

BIOS is an integral part of your computer and comes with it when you bring it home. (In contrast, the operating system can either be preinstalled by the manufacturer or vendor or installed by the user.) BIOS is a program that is made accessible to the microprocessor on an eraseable programmable read-only memory ( EPROM ) chip. When you turn on your computer, the microprocessor passes control to the BIOS program, which is always located at the same place on EPROM.

When BIOS boots up (starts up) your computer, it first determines whether all of the attachments are in place and operational and then it loads the operating system (or key parts of it) into your computer's random access memory ( RAM ) from your hard disk or diskette drive.
