Google IPv6

We care a lot about the health of the Internet. Recently, we've become increasingly concerned that IPv4 addresses — the numbers that computers use to connect to the Internet — are running out. Current projections place IPv4 address space exhaustion somewhere in late 2011, and while technologies such as Network Address Translation (NAT) can offer temporary respite, they complicate the Internet's architecture, pose barriers to the development of new applications, and run contrary to network openness principles.

That's why we're pleased to let you know that Google search is also available over IPv6 at ipv6.google.com (you'll need an IPv6 connection to view it). While IPv4 provides about four billion IP addresses — not enough to assign one to every one of Earth's more than six billion inhabitants — IPv6 provides enough address space to assign almost three billion networks to every person on the planet. We hope that by allowing every computer and mobile device on the network to talk to each other directly — an idea known as the "end-to-end principle" that was crucial to the original design of the Internet — IPv6 will allow the continued growth of the Internet and enable new applications yet to be invented.

With current operating systems such as Windows Vista, Mac OS X, and Linux providing high-quality support for IPv6, we hope it's only a matter of time before IPv6 is widely deployed. We will be doing our part.

100 E-mail Bouncebacks? You've Been Backscattered

The bounceback e-mail messages come in at a trickle, maybe one or two every hour. The subject lines are disquieting: "Cyails, Vygara nad Levytar," "UNSOLICITED BULK EMAIL, apparently from you."

You eye your computer screen; you're nervous. What's going on ? Have you been hacked? Are you some kind of zombie botnet spammer?

Nope, you're just getting a little backscatter -- bounceback messages from legitimate e-mail servers that have been fooled by the spammers.

Spammers like to put fake information in their e-mail messages in order to sneak them past e-mail filters. Because e-mail filters now just delete messages that come from nonexistent domains, the spammers like to make their messages look like they come from real e-mail addresses. That means, if your e-mail address has been published on the Web somewhere, you're a prime candidate for backscattering.

The spammer finds your address, or sometimes even guesses it, and then puts it in the "from" line of his messages, sending them out to hundreds of thousands of recipients. When the spam gets sent to an address that is no longer active, it can sometimes be bounced back ... to you.

Although Sophos estimates that backscatter makes up just two percent or three percent of all spam, antispam vendors say these messages are on the rise lately.

Nokia PC Suite 6.85 upgrade

Looks like Nokia has PC Suite version 6.85.11.1 just about ready for official release. And it has been nicely improved from the previous version.

The first thing you notice when you launch Nokia PC Suite 6.85 is the new sidebar:

nokia-pc-suite-685.jpg

The upper part of the sidebar has a nifty application that allows you to Drag&Drop any file from your PC to your Nokia phone. I tried this with pictures, mp3 and video and it worked great. Nokia PC Suite even converted the file I dropped to mp4 format readable by my Nokia N95.

GOOGLE co-founder marriage

Google chief’s search engine reveals his wedding secret

GOOGLE co-founder and chief executive Larry Page’s wedding today is supposed to be a secret affair.

But his own search engine is undermining the effort.

A recent Google search for “Larry Page marriage” revealed a number of details about the event. Mr Page will definitely be married today to a woman named Lucy Southworth at an “undisclosed location” — meaning on Necker Island, Richard Branson’s 74-acre estate in the Virgin Islands.

Six hundred guests are reportedly due to attend the ceremony to see Mr Page, 34, and Ms Southworth, 27, tie the knot.

Although the guest list is a closely-guarded secret, former US President Bill Clinton, his wife and presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton, U2 singer Bono, as well as several billionaires and Silicon Valley visionaries are thought to have been invited.

Having only dated for a year, it is not known if the happy couple have signed a pre-nuptial agreement.

Microsoft releases a ton of details about Windows Vista SP1

Windows Vista SP1 overview
With the public release of the first release candidate for Windows Vista Service Pack 1 scheduled for this week, Microsoft is making a ton of documentation available explaining the ins and outs of the service pack.

In a nutshell, the update packs a ton of hardware compatibility, system reliability, performance and power consumption, and security improvements. The standalone installer will be 450MB, but if you download Service Pack 1 through Windows Update, it will probably only take up about 65MB. That's because you may have already downloaded many of the hotfixes, security updates and other features included in Service Pack 1.

Reading through the whole list of updates will probably make your eyes bleed, but here are a handful of features we're excited about:
  • Adds support for Direct3D® 10.1, an update to Direct3D 10 that extends the API to support new hardware features.
  • SP1 addresses issues many of the most common causes of crashes and hangs in Windows Vista, as reported by Windows Error Reporting. These include issues relating to Windows Calendar, Windows Media Player, and a number of drivers included with Windows Vista.

High-tech consumer products and services include everything smart phones, voice-over-IP systems and flash memory sticks used into their workplace. Below 8 popular consumer technologies and services that have crept into the workplace and provide some insight into how companies are achieving the balance of security, productivity and sanity.

1. Instant messaging

2. Web mail

3. Portable storage devices

4. PDAs and smart phones

5. Camera phones

6. Skype and other consumer VoIP services

7. Downloadable widgets

8. Virtual worlds

Unfortunately, this trend poses problems for IT organizations. For one thing, the use of these technologies increases the risk of security breaches. Moreover, users expect IT to support these devices and services, especially once they interact with applications in the corporate environmen.

10 Richest People In Tech

Is this a sign that IT is yesterday’s news? Actually, no: Carlos himself is a telecommunications magnate, and while the top 10 list isn’t dominated by tech people, the top 100 still has its fair share of geeks. With the web growing at a miraculous pace, we’re hoping to see the Google founders eventually joined by more web-based entrepreneurs, although the desktop paradigm will likely remain strong for years to come. Let’s take a look at the current list of top 10 wealthiest people in IT.

Carlos Slim Helú

carlos

Net worth: $67.8 billion
Company: Telmex, América Móvil, Grupo Carso

What? Telecommunications are IT. The fact that Carlos Slim may not be as known worldwide as some other people on this list doesn’t mean he doesn’t pack 67.8 billion dollars. Add Rupert Murdoch’s wealth to that of Bill Gates and they still barely overtake Carlos, and that says a lot. If you wonder how he got here so fast, it’s due to his company América Móvil’s stock jumping a whopping 27% in the second quarter of 2007.

2. William H. Gates III

Bill Gates

Net Worth: $59.2 billion
Company: Microsoft

Now you’re sorry you gave all that money to charity, eh Bill? Being number two kinda sucks, but don’t worry, Microsoft’s long term online strategy will…oh, wait. In any case, Bill Gates has been numero uno for so long we were kinda used to him in this spot. Frankly, we expected him to be overtaken by those two kids from Google, but the telecoms magnate instead reigned supreme. Bill is actually focused on giving away his fortune to good causes from now on, and has said previously that he doesn’t care much for being the richest man in the world.

3. Lawrence Ellison

Lawrence Ellison

Net Worth: $21.5 billion
Company: Oracle

Oracle? Bo-ring. Ellison has been able to lurk near the top 10 overall for quite some time now, and although he’s slowly slipping the ranks (at one point in time in 2000, he was the richest man in the world), he’s still doing really, really well. Well, what can you do: databases are always in fashion.

4. Paul Allen

Paul Allen

Net Worth: $18.0 billion
Company: Microsoft

There was a time when Paul and Bill were both in the overall top 10 list of billionaires, but this was a long, long time ago. Now, Paul is at the 19th place overall and only fourth in IT, with the Google guys breathing down his neck. His ties with Microsoft aren’t so strong, and he sold some 68 million shares of the company, which left him with a meager sum of 138 million shares. He likes to invest in anything and anyone: real estate, sports, even space programs. He’s also known for owning the Octopus, the world’s fifth biggest yacht, as well as a couple of smaller ones.

5 & 6. Sergey Brin & Larry Page

Sergey BrinLarry Page

Net Worth: $16.6 billion (each)
Company: Google

We’ve put these two rascals together because their huge wallets are the exact same size. Combine their wealth, and they jump to number 3; I hope you guys realize why it’s bad to have a co-founder? If you must have one, at least stab them in the back and get rid of ‘em before you get wealthy, so you don’t have to share. But, we digress. The fact that these sheer billions originate from an algorithm and an almost blank white web page with a colorful logo and a single form is still astonishing.

7. Michael Dell

Michael Del

Net Worth: $15.8 billion
Company: Dell

When you count all the problems that Dell (the company) had, it’s a wonder that it still manages to be the number one hardware company in the world (or, if you ask HP, the number two company). Michael is currently struggling to retain this position as he took control of the company once again, replacing Kevin Rollins at the beginning of this year, and the situation is not too cheery at the moment, so you can expect Michael to drop a position on this list real soon.

8. Steven Ballmer

Steven Ballmer

Net Worth: $15.0 billion
Company: Microsoft

Developers developers developers! Laugh all you like (heck, take a look at that dancing video on YouTube again if you must), but he’s got 15 billion dollars, and you have to choose between the iPhone and food for a month. Oh yeah, although he has money to burn, Steve has an office smaller than my bathroom. Go figure.

9. Naguib Sawiris

Naguib

Net Worth: $10.0 billion
Company: Orascom Telecom Holding

Naguib Sawiris is the chairman and CEO of Egypt’s Orascom Telecom, a multinational GSM mobile phone operating in the emerging markets of Middle East, Africa, and South Asia. As a good indicator of just how fast these markets grow, just look at Naguib’s last year position on Forbes’ list: 278.

10. Sunil Mittal

Sunil

Net Worth: $9.5 billion
Company: Bharti Telecom

More proof that if you want to be a multi-billionaire, the telecoms industry is where it’s at. Sunil Mittal is the chairman and managing director of Bharti group, which runs India’s largest GSM mobile phone service. Although Sunil has nearly $9.5 billion dollars, he’s only the 6th richest Indian in the world. Talk about fierce competition.

Do you to be a billionere...follow them.
