Applications for Baby Monitoring

Baby monitoring is no doutly very essential and important for every parent. And luckily, many advanced baby monitoring devices such as the iPhone can help parents a lot. An iPhone can actually monitor their child from a different room and even over 3G anywhere in the world with many of special apps.

1 Video Babymonitor

Video Babymonitor lets you view your baby while on the same Wi-Fi network. You can even view the video stream on your computer. There is a noise indicator which allows you to visually see noise in the room. The stream is password protected, which is a nice added protection if you have Wi-Fi thieves.

2 BabySight

BabySight works in conjunction with a Mac app. The benefit here is your Mac will be less likely to run out of battery life. The downside is you need a Mac and often the Mac will be harder to position. There is a night mode, which basically cranks up your Mac’s display to see in the dark.

3 My Baby Monitor

This app captures both photo and sound level from one Iphone and transfer them to the other iPhone(iPod Touch). This allows you to see wherever you are around the house if your baby is awake and crying. The application works through either Wifi connection for further distance or Bluetooth.

4 Baby Monitor HD

Baby Monitor HD lets you have up to four different live video streams. Instead of using an iPhone you must use the Y-Cam cameras, which cost around $300. The technology is really solid and works really well.

Axialis Icon Workshop

Windows lets you customize its look in lots of ways, and one of the coolest is the ability to change almost any icon to suit your style or to create themes. While there's no shortage of icons available online, why not make your own? It's much easier than you might think, especially with the help of Axialis IconWorkshop. True to its name, it handles just about every aspect of the job, from creating, extracting, and converting icons to managing whole libraries of them.

The full-featured IconWorkshop is free to use for 30 days. The latest release has tons of updates and new features, tops among them the ability to create Android and iPhone icons. But it also has many new Object packs, more image formats, bitmap editing, enhanced batch processing, and Windows 8, Mac OS X, and Photoshop plug-in compatibility.

Setting up IconWorkshop includes choosing icon file associations, with an option to automatically repair incorrect associations (something we'd like to see in other programs, too). We could also choose a Mac OS option. IconWorkshop lets you open, modify, and save Mac OS-compatible icons as well as convert them to BinHex and Windows ICO. Clearly, this is a program that takes icons seriously! That impression was strengthened by well-configured user interface that follows the popular Explorer-style layout, with a Web-style toolbar, a tree view/navigation sidebar to the left of the main window, and palettes and tools on the right.

We clicked Windows Icon under Create New Projects on IconWorkshop's comprehensive Start Screen. A detailed wizard screen started us off on what proved a remarkably easy process, considering the dizzying array of choices. Anyone who has used photo or graphics editors, drawing programs, and similar tools won't have any trouble with IconWorkshop's layout or features, but a top-quality Help file and manual is a click away.

New Ultra-Slim Samsung Chromebook for $249

Google announced on Thursday a new budget Samsung Chromebook laptop, dubbed as “the computer for everyone.”

The 11.6-inch Samsung Chromebook — priced at $249 and available for pre-order now from Amazon, Best Buy and other retailers — aims to be the second or third computer in your household. It runs on Chrome OS and is super slim, measuring only 0.8 inches thick and weighing 2.5 pounds.

The device packs a Samsung-made ARM Cortex-A15 processor, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of flash storage. The screen resolution is 1,366 x 768, and the computer supports 1080p video playback as well as Bluetooth 3.0. It also comes with one USB 3.0 and one USB 2.0 port, is rated at hours of battery life and includes 100GB of free cloud storage on Google Drive.

Given the specs, the machine is less powerful than the Chromebooks Google unveiled earlier this year. Even for customers who already use Chromebooks as a main computer, Google is positioning the new model to serve mainly as an additional device — for example, to casually catch up on emails in the kitchen or connect with loved ones via video chat.

Guide to Partition Your Hard Drive

Disk partitioning divides the data storage space of a hard disk into separate areas referred to as 'partitions'. Partitions are usually created when the hard disk is first being prepared for usage. Once a disk is divided into partitions, directories and files may be stored on them.

Hard disk partitioning tools will allow you to create additional partitions from existing ones by resizing the existing partitions and creating empty, un-used space on which you can create new partitions. The most important aspect of such tools is their ability to do this without losing your data that is currently on your existing partitions. Such tools allow you to create and format these new partitions.

Most tools will let you convert a partition from one file type to another, i.e. from NTFS to FAT/FAT32 or vice versa. Needless to say that in most cases, such a conversion, especially from NTFS to FAT/FAT32 will cause the files to lose their NTFS permissions (ACLs), and in some cases where EFS was used to encrypt the files, it will actually cause you to lose access to these files. So beware!

Use Partition Tools to partition your HD

1. Ultimate Boot CD
2. GParted Live
3. System RescueCD
4. Ranish Partition Manager

Metro move from Firefox

With only a few weeks to go before Microsoft's big Windows overhaul, Mozilla puts forward its first version of Firefox preview optimized for Windows 8's touch interface.

How to install it
Once you download and run the Firefox Metro Preview (download installer) in Windows 8, you must close Firefox in Metro and Desktop if you already have them installed, then open the Control Panel and set Internet Explorer as the default browser.

From there, run in Desktop mode the Firefox Nightly EXE that you just downloaded and set it as the Default when prompted. A Windows 8 prompt will open, choose Nightly as the default, and then in Firefox, go to Options/Advanced/General and set it as the default browser there, too.

What works and what doesn't -- so far
The Metro Preview version of Firefox is being worked on in an experimental branch of the Firefox Nightly builds called Elm. Erica Jostedt, Mozilla's Senior Manager of Product Communications, confirmed that it doesn't have a ship date yet. "We don't have the set timeline yet -- it's a preview right now that's updated nightly, but on the Elm branch. When it lands on mozilla-central, it's officially on the trains," she wrote in an e-mail to CNET.

"Elm is the experimental repository where most of our Metro development work has been happening. This repository produces nightly builds, much like the Firefox Nightly channel," wrote Asa Dotzler, Firefox's product manager. Those builds will update automatically every day, but they're not part of the regular Firefox release schedule.

It has more features optimized for Windows 8 than Google Chrome does. Chrome's Metro support landed a few months ago, but hasn't seen much public development since then and basically resembles the Desktop mode version. The Firefox Metro Preview also showcases the Australis interface, which remakes Firefox visually to look much more like its Android counterpart. -Cnet Review

Free Download PDV Converter

Printer-based freeware PDF utilities like Softland's doPDF Free are unobtrusive yet flexible and a great choice for the home office, small business, and individual user. You just have to click the Print command in any application, and then select the program from your list of installed printers. Instead of printing out your converted document, the program saves it as a PDF. You can set basic output options like document size and resolution, but doPDF is designed to be as simple and lightweight as possible.

Although doPDF works like a print driver, it installs normally like any Windows program. During the installation process, you have the option to set doPDF as your default printer, which can be handy for business PCs that are mostly used to generate electronic documents such as invoices and purchase orders. You can also set up the program with a wide range of languages, too -- all of them or as many as you need. When the installer finished, doPDF's Startup window opened, along with a tutorial on the program's Web site.

The Startup window is an ultra-simple conversion wizard with a browsing file entry field and Create, Help, and Close buttons. Clicking Help opens a fairly substantial Help file, but doPDF prints all the instructions you need right on the dialog. You can open the Startup window from doPDF's Start Menu entry, but the easiest way to use the program is by clicking Print and selecting doPDF from your list of printers. That's also how you access the program's minimal settings, via the Printing Preferences and Print Properties for doPDF under Devices and Printers. The program's properties sheet includes a button linking to a paid upgrade that offers more features than doPDF Free. - cnet.com

Antivirus : F-Secure Easy Clean updated

F-Secure has released an updated version of its stand-alone antivirus detector, Easy Clean.

The new build is smaller than previous releases at under 4MB. You can scan your system just by launching the executable; no installation is required. But most usefully, Easy Clean now contacts F-Secure’s cloud-based servers to obtain details about the very latest threats, so there’s no need for it to download regular updates. (Although, of course, this does also mean that you now must have a fully functional internet connection for Easy Clean to be of any use.)

There are, of course, plenty of similar tools around which promise to offer a similar second line of antivirus defence. And you may prefer these for multiple reasons. Easy Clean only appears to do a relatively quick scan of running processes, for instance; if you’re trying to hunt down a really stubborn infection then you may prefer something which offers a more thorough and complete system scan.

Third-party applications for iOS

Facebook announced on Wednesday U.S. users will now be able to promote their personal posts to friends for a fee, but the news is being met with mixed reactions.

Although testing first started in New Zealand in May and has since rolled out to more than 20 countries, those in the U.S. can now pay to make sure your network never misses a big update in your life, from a baby announcement to an event you’re organizing. But each promoted post will cost you $7.

That’s right, you can pay to make sure your content is seen by friends on Facebook. This raises two major questions: Why should you have to pay for something that was once already a part of the site, and does this mean we’ll now inundated with life updates we don’t really care about?

Some argue users might not take advantage of the promoted option, while others believe it could be a great resource for getting news out about bands, garage sales and ticketed events. Facebook seems to think it will make the entire experience better for its users.

Firefox 7 Beta 5 Released

Mozilla recently released Firefox 7 Beta 5, the beta has been made available for Windows, Mac and Linux platforms. Mozilla is planning to release Firefox 7 final by the end of September 2011. Early adopters can install Firefox 7 beta 5 to test the new features. The boost of memory performance is the key aspect of Firefox 7. Mozilla's MemShrink project aims to reduce Firefox's memory consumption and avoid memory leaks in Firefox 7. Mozilla claims that Firefox 7 uses less memory than Firefox 6: often 20% to 30% less, and sometimes as much as 50% less.

The latest version of Firefox beta has the following changes: drastically improved memory use; add a new rendering backend to speed up Canvas operations on Windows systems; bookmark and password changes now sync almost instantly when using Firefox Sync; added support for text-overflow: ellipsis and Web Timing specification; added an opt-in system for users to send performance data back to Mozilla to improve future versions of Firefox. This can be enabled by installing an add-on Fixed several stability issues.

Firefox Beta is the build for those who like a little bit of jeopardy, but who don’t want to risk everything by trying out Firefox Aurora. It gives you a sneak peek at the next version of Firefox with a relatively stable build that’s not quite ready for primetime, but still pretty solid. Whereas Firefox Aurora installs as a completely separate application alongside your existing Firefox installation, Firebox Beta will replace the stable build. Should you subsequently wish to go back to the safer version, you’ll need to manually download the stable version and install it over the top of the beta build. Confirm which build you have by selecting About Firefox from the Firefox menu or button (it’s inside the Help menu if using the Firefox button).

Compared with the recent released Firefox 6, Firefox 7 is a bigger update, with much improved memory management and a host of similar features. There are all the usual improvements including enhancements to Firefox Sync, increased performance for HTML5 Canvas animation and better CSS3 support, but none of those really matter because there's one important improvement that isn't even visible to the user.

The latest Firefox 7 brings a number of fixes to the memory footprint, particularly for users who like to keep multiple tabs open and iconify rather than close their web browser. Other changes include dropping http:// from the awesome bar and painting the sub-domain element of a URL in lighter grey.

As we have seen on previous Firefox versions, there aren't important visible changes in this new release, but, nevertheless Firefox 7 is speedier and comes with bug fixes. Mozilla's next release of Firefox will be known for its significant reductions in memory utilisation, an issue that has dogged Firefox since its first release. Now Mozilla says it has implemented what it calls Memshrink in such a way that it expects somewhere on the order of a 20 to 30 per cent decrease in memory utilisation and sometimes as much as 50% less. In particular, Firefox 7′s memory usage will stay steady if you leave it running overnight, and it will free up more memory when you close many tabs.

Firefox 7 features proper remedy to the age-old memory leak problem. Instead of relying on the user to manually free up memory using the "about:memory" dialog, version 7 takes control of the process itself through increased garbage collection frequency and defragmentation of memory chunks, which will reduce Firefox's memory consumption by tens or even hundreds of megabytes over a lengthy period. In the meantime, how you can stop Firefox's increasing memory demands from spiralling out of control? The answer lies with a tiny add-on appropriately titled Memory Restart.

Memory Restart does two things: first, it displays Firefox's current memory consumption in the Add-ons Bar. This immediately reveals how Firefox's memory demands increase over time, regardless of how it's being used. When Firefox's memory consumption hits 500MB, the text will change to red to warn you that it's in danger of overrunning the rest of your system, telling you it's time to shut down and restart Firefox to free up most of the memory it's snaffled. Memory Restart's other trick is that you can configure it from its Options dialog to automatically restart Firefox when the 500MB threshold is reached, preserving all your open tabs and allowing you to continue browsing without too much hassle. Better still, the arbitrary 500MB figure can be altered to any amount you like, allowing you to tweak Memory Restart according to the amount of installed RAM in your computer.
