Microsoft Office 2010 Beta version is available and Microsoft has announced that the 2010 productivity suite will be available for public by June 2010 and more significantly they have also declared their strategy of MS Office for mobile phones or specifically the smartphones. Earlier versions of Microsoft Office could only be installed on the Windows Mobile phones like Samsung Omnia. Most other smartphones today does not run on Windows Mobile Phones and hence no MS Office on them. This new announcement on Tuesday opened the door for MS Office even on non Winodws Mobile Phones like iPhone.
According to the announcement the Office 2010 on mobile phones can be accessed through two ways. First method is to use the Web Apps version of MS Office 2010. This version is light and comes as free to download and install. It will support the Safari 4 browser of the iPhone 3G andiPhone 3GS. But sadly, the version does not permit editing of files and you can only view the Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote Documents.
The second option allows the full utility including editing. But this version can only be installed on the Windows Mobile 6.5 OS. This means that you can not edit the MS Office documents on your iPhone.
Overall, the announcement is a disappointment because still the standard MS Office version is not made available to a wide range of platforms like iPhone OS or Android. Users must run Windows Mobile OS to run the MS Office 2010. The versions available on the other platforms are only a watered down version of the actual software and it simply sucks to be polite. What do you think?
