Reasons to Deploy Windows 8

Many IT pros have strong opinions on the topic, so in the interest of presenting both side of the argument I’ve decided to write two articles: This one, which provides six reasons why you should deploy Windows 8, and a second article to appear early next week that serves up six reasons why you shouldn’t take the plunge.

So what are the most IT-friendly features of Windows 8 that would warrant an upgrade? Let’s take a look.

1. Windows To Go
One of the most promising features of Windows 8 Enterprise is Windows To Go, a feature that allows admins to create bootable, self-contained installations of Windows 8 on USB sticks and other USB storage devices. The Windows To Go installation is fully manageable as a traditional client OS, and it can be moved to other PCs with the users settings, files, and other configuration data kept intact. It’s a great feature for end-users and administrators alike, and I’m sure it will prove to be one of the most popular, IT-friendly features of Windows 8.

2. Client Hyper-V
Windows 8 marks the arrival of full-blown client virtualization to the client with Windows Client Hyper-V. Client Hyper-V is far superior to Microsoft Virtual PC, and provides IT administrators who have adopted Microsoft’s enterprise virtualization solutions an efficient and powerful way to manage create and manage virtual machines on Windows 8 client PCs. For more information, see our multi-part series on Client Hyper-V by Jeff Hicks.

3. Picture Password
Password security and management has always been a big time sink for IT professionals, and Windows 8 introduces a new feature that should help users remember their password and improve security at the same time. Called Picture Password, this security feature requires users to choose a picture and apply a touch-based gesture to it in order to gain access to the system. As an example, a user might select a photo of his wife as the picture component, then draw a smile on her face with a finger gesture. It's an innovative way to improve security while potentially reducing the ubiquitous (and resource-sapping) "I forgot my password" routine that many IT help desks have to deal with.

4. Faster Boost Times
One of the biggest complaints that many users have had about Windows over the years is the sometimes-lethargic boot times that Windows PCs experience. You know, the "I get to work, turn on my PC, get some coffee, chat with co-workers, eat breakfast, and then check for the Windows desktop"-type boot speed. While that may be hyperbole, Microsoft has invested significantly in reducing Windows 8 boot times, as you see below in the Microsoft-provided chart that compares Windows 7 to Windows 8 boot times. See the 'Building Windows 8' blog for more information on how Microsoft was able to put Windows boot times on a diet. - petri.co.il

How to Use Twitter Hashtags for Business?

In your small business' case, you may choose to attach a hashtag, such as #smallbiz, or even your brand's name itself, as #nike might do. This improves the chance that other Twitter users will find your tweet in targeted Twitter searches. But hashtags also streamline your own processes. For instance, you may ask users to include a unique hashtag in their own tweets as part of your newest Twitter marketing campaign. Throughout your campaign, the hashtag files tweets for easy search and organization within Twitter.com.

Now that you're familiar with the basic hashtag concept, let's apply principles specific to small businesses. Follow these five tips to improve your brand's hashtag strategy.

1. Seek business-specific conversations. If you use Twitter for nothing else, use it to learn from others. Head to hashtags like #SMB or #smallbiz for advice, resources and current news of the small business variety (also follow along during Twitter chats). Although broad hashtags like these can generate an overwhelming number of tweets every day, tune in every so often for a quick update. A couple of scrolls down the feed could inspire your next blog post, marketing tactic or bestseller.

If you seek a more specific conversation, narrow hashtags down by topic. The #marketing hashtag contains a ton of small business-related content, as does #sales. Or take a peek in the #startups or #entrepreneurs hashtag for inspirational profiles in the space. Finally, if you're looking for tips on meeting like-minded businesspeople, try the #networking hashtag.

2. Keep it simple and consistent. When crafting hashtags for your own tweets, it's important to keep a couple rules of thumb in mind. First, keep your tags simple and direct. In a tweet about your latest blog post, which explains your company's use of finance apps, don't create a long, complex hashtag. Pair the tweet with hashtags like #apps and #SmallBiz, versus #SmallBusinessAppsandTools. Overly complicated hashtags like these are neither search-friendly nor commonly used, so your tweet will get buried quickly.

Secondly, don't weigh your tweets down with excessive hashtags. If your intention is to be thorough, a thoughtful, precise selection of 1-2 hashtags per tweet works. Seven hashtags reads like desperate marketing, and is a sure way to lose followers quickly.

3. Create your own hashtag. Hashtags are a great way to generate buzz around a marketing campaign. Domino's Pizza encouraged followers to tweet with #letsdolunch. Once the number of tweets reached 85,000, Domino's dropped prices by more than half during the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. that day.

Turn to Twitter when launching a contest, another great marketing tactic for your brand. Simply ask people to tweet with a specific hashtag when they submit ideas, jokes or photos. That way, when the entry period is over, you'll be able to easily locate submissions in one place.

Events are great opportunities for creating conversation around hashtags. Award your event a unique hashtag well before the actual date; you'll be able to generate content and discussion about the event before it even begins. (For example, Mashable created the hashtag #MashBash for one of our largest events ever, at CES 2012.) Then during the event, encourage participants to tweet with that hashtag with signage and other hashtagged swag. People in attendance both physically and via the web then will be able to follow interesting activities and discussion.

Finally, get creative. Use hashtags for Twitter chats and invite an industry expert to answer tweeted questions from your brand's followers. Or begin a game on Twitter using hashtags. For instance, ask people to tweet #PastTenseSitcoms, like "Family Mattered." It's a clever way to get people excited to connect with your hip, entertaining brand (we'd be remiss to not mention our own #Mashtags fun here).

4. Organize social dashboards by hashtag. One of the most convenient ways to stay on top of relevant hashtags is to designate easily accessible columns within your social dashboard. Whether you use HootSuite or TweetDeck, you can establish columns by social network, search term, Twitter list or hashtag.

Consider adding a small business-themed hashtag column to check whenever you have a moment. Add further columns as they become relevant, for example, when you launch a hashtag marketing campaign or contest. Then delete the column when the hashtag has run its course. -openforum.com

Apps For Your Business Cards

Granted, it might be easier to accept a physical, paper business card, but you still have to enter that person’s email address and phone number into your contact book. Instead, import or share business cards with two or three taps to eliminate post-event busy work.

These five mobile apps either scan paper business cards into the cloud for easy organization or shun paper all together, so you can manage contacts from your smartphone.

How do you handle business cards in today’s digitally inclined climate? Which app do you find the easiest?

How to upgrade to Windows 8?

The Windows 8 eagle has landed, which means that Microsoft's $39.99 in-place upgrade is now available. They've made it extremely easy to upgrade your computer from a Windows 7, Vista, or XP computer to Windows 8. Here's how it's done.

First, check out our CNET guide on how to prepare your computer for Windows 8. There's also instructions on how to restore your old system, which is important in case something unexpectedly goes awry, or you decide you don't like Windows 8, you can restore what you had before.

If you're upgrading a laptop, you must take note of your Wi-Fi passwords. Windows 8 will keep your settings, personal files, and programs if you upgrade from Windows 7. Vista and XP upgraders will have to re-install programs and reconfigure settings.

Next, go to Microsoft's Windows 8 site. Scroll down to the offer and click "Get the details." It's $39.99 for the downloadable installer, or $69.99 to have them mail you a disc.

When you click on the Download Pro link, it will give to your computer a small "stub" installer. It's a 5 MB file that will run a compatibility check on your computer, tell you which programs will and won't work in Windows 8, and let you know if you have to uninstall any of them.

Until Windows 8 begins its installation, there's some babysitting required. After running the stub, it'll tell you how much of your current computer is compatible, and if there's anything you'll have to review. On the Toshiba Satellite running Windows 7 that I tested this on, I learned that Windows 8 is about as fond of bloatware as the rest of us: the upgrade process requested that I uninstall several Toshiba-branded programs.

You don't have to stop everything to take care of them, though, because the Windows 8 installer will walk you through that process. After letting you know whether there are details that will require your attention, it asks Windows 7 upgraders what they'd like to keep of their settings, apps, and personal files.

After that, it asks you to buy the upgrade. The ordering process happens in the installer, too. Once you've paid by either credit card or PayPal, it will start downloading the 2 GB installer. You get a choice of installing immediately, installing later, or creating a USB key or disc from which to run the installer.

After that, it prompts you to remove any programs that cause conflicts on Windows 8, such as the aforementioned Toshiba-built software. It's clearly a nuanced process, though, as I wasn't required to uninstall all of it -- just four programs out of 11 conflicts. If you have to restart your computer, just double-click on the Windows 8 installation icon on your desktop and it will quickly find where it left off.

Once any conflicts are eliminated, Windows 8 will install. It's a surprisingly fast process, as long as you remember to babysit it at the beginning.

Modern platform games for iOS

There's something about jumping through levels, solving puzzles, and collecting coins that keeps gamers entertained. Also, the ability to play through a single level while on the go makes platformers perfect for short bursts of play on your iOS device.

While a console controller is probably the ideal way to play these sometimes precise running and jumping games, iOS game developers have come up with unique ways to make them work.

This week's collection of iOS apps is all about modern platform games. The first is the most traditional platformer, but adds an interesting twist for passing levels. The second has an uncommon control system, but a unique art style and fun, varied gameplay make it a great option. The third is the most polished of the collection, with challenging puzzles and a somewhat grotesque storyline.

The control system for Mikey Shorts is super simple. You have a game pad on the left for moving left and right, and buttons for jumping and sliding under obstacles on the right. As you play, you'll find prisoners that have been turned to stone, and you'll need to pass through them to grab energy and to set them free. Each checkpoint gate in the game requires a certain amount of energy, which happens to be exactly the number of prisoners in that section, so you'll need to save them all to move on. There are also coins you can grab to spend on an enormous number of outfits, eyewear, and hairstyles. The coins aren't necessary like saving the prisoners is, but it's still fun to try out new looks.

What makes this game especially fun, though, is the 3-star rating system. You're not judged on grabbing everything in any of the 84 levels in the game. Instead, the main goal in Mikey Shorts is to get to the end as fast as possible. The requirements are especially challenging for a perfect 3-star score, and I often found myself repeating levels for the perfect run. But even though the game takes a little practice, once you get into the groove of performing speed runs, you'll start getting the perfect scores more easily.

Mikey Shorts isn't going to dazzle you with fancy graphics, but the need to fly through levels is the thing that will keep you coming back for one more run. If you like the idea of going for the best time, this game is excellent. -by Jason Parker

Windows 8 is hard!

A U.K. design firm put Windows 8 under the microscope recently, and users reported some issues with handling the operating system.

The firm in question, Foolproof, had 14 "typical users" try out Windows 8 for the first time to see how they fared using the new-look operating system. This tiny group reportedly consisted of regular Windows users, so they supposedly weren't coming to the Microsoft universe cold.

But Microsoft's new user interface, which largely consists of a series of tiles, ditching the traditional look and feel of Windows, "comes with a huge learning overhead." Foolproof's relatively small number of testers made several observations, including:
  • The user interface was "fresh and attractive," but by the end of the session, none of them "felt confident using the new interface."
  • They were confused on how to open Internet Explorer.
  • They quickly became confused by e-mails, responding that they didn't realize that text fields were editable.
  • The lack of the tray on the bottom of the screen caused some to feel like they lost apps when switching from one to another.
That there is a steep learning curve is nothing new to those who have used the software. In CNET's own review of Windows 8, it found that the operating system's "learning curve is steep and in-app navigation isn't obvious. There are just too many known unknowns here."

Skype 6.0, Facebook integration

Just days before its app launches with Windows 8, Skype announced today that it has updated its current desktop program for Windows and Mac.

Dubbed Skype 6.0, the voice over Internet protocol application now includes support for signing into the service with a Microsoft or Facebook account, effectively eliminating the requirement for new users to create a Skype account. In addition, users will be able to instant message with contacts from Windows Live Messenger, Hotmail, and Outlook.com.

Skype's update illustrates its increasing integration with Microsoft products. Microsoft acquired Skype last year for $8.5 billion, saying that it planned to make Skype work closely with many of its products.

One of those many products is Windows 8. Earlier this week, Skype introduced a revamped version of its software for Windows 8 users. The app is designed to mimic the look and feel of Microsoft's operating system, which launches on Friday and offers everything from instant messaging to audio and video chatting.

Until then, Skype 6.0 is ready and waiting. Skype says it has also increased its Windows client's language support with six more languages. The Windows client also comes with an interface refresh. On the Mac side, Skype will allow users to open chats in multiple windows. The software also now includes support for Apple's Retina display.

Skype 6.0 for Desktop is available now.

VIDEO : Mini New York City to Hype Windows 8 Launch

Microsoft is celebrating the launch of Windows 8 in an unusual way: By creating a miniature replica of New York City.

Well, not that mini. “Microtropolis” as it is known, will stand at 160 feet. The goal is to promote the new OS, though it’s not clear exactly how. In a blog post explaining the installation, Kristina Libby, a Microsoft pr manager wrote that Mictropolis “creates the ultimate hands-on demonstration of Windows 8, with the city of NYC as the backdrop.” Libby then added:

As you walk into the installation, you are literally walking through the avenues and streets with skyscrapers towering above. This interactive experience has hundreds of devices placed on rooftops within the city, customized to the neighborhoods in which they are placed.

The creation features 25 of New York’s neighborhoods, which include Start Screens curated by “notable New Yorkers.”

For those in the area, the installation will be on display at Hudson River Park’s Pier 57 from Oct. 26-Nov. 3.

YouTube to Allow Links to External Websites

Some good news here. YouTube publishers will soon be allowed to create clickable hyperlinks to their own website from within a video using annotations. Thus, if your YouTube video explains how to boil an egg, you can insert an annotation linking to your blog post where the steps are described in greater detail.

Dror Shimshowitz, YouTube Head of Product for Creators, made this announcement last week while speaking at a YouTube Partner event in San Bruno.

YouTube does support clickable annotations at this time but a limitation is that these links should either point to another YouTube video or a search results page on the YouTube website. With the new changes, publishers in good standing will be able to drive traffic to their own website from YouTube videos.

Dror didn’t exactly specify the time frame when this feature will go live but, hopefully, the wait shouldn’t be long as another feature discussed at the same event – Invideo Programming – is already live on YouTube.

Google AdWords Can Now Track iOS App Downloads

Google announced today that marketers and advertisers promoting iOS applications can now monitor conversions – meaning app downloads – using Google’s AdWords. The news follows Google’s earlier move this April to offer a similar tracking option for Android applications.

With the added support for the iOS platform, businesses can track downloads of their Android or iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch applications from their AdWords campaigns as an AdWords conversion. Simply put, it means that when a user downloads a mobile app from either Google Play or the iTunes App Store after first clicking on an ad, that download can now be tracked.

However, there is a caveat: Google says that for iOS applications, it’s only able to track downloads driven by ads served within mobile apps – it can’t track iOS app downloads that originate from ad on Google Search or its Google Display network. That limits the level of insight Google can provide into the Apple ecosystem, but at least it’s a step in the right direction in terms of understanding which campaigns are most effective.

In order to implement iOS app download tracking, app marketers will have to set up a new conversion in their AdWords account, download and integrate an SDK into their mobile app, then paste a small line of code into the app to call the SDK. The code snippet is found in the same section of their AdWords account where publishers previously set up their Android app downloads. It’s a few more steps to get going – Android app marketers have been able to track their apps codelessly, Google notes, just by setting up a new conversion in their account.

Note that downloads can only be tracked when the ad points directly to the App Store (third-party URLs are not supported). Google is hosting a webinar here on YouTube which will have more on this topic.

Windows 8 corporate uptake set to be slow

There was once a time when the launch of a new Windows operating system was a huge deal for the technology departments in many businesses. Not anymore.

Microsoft Corp’s release of Windows 8 on Friday is likely to be a non-event for most companies — and some experts say many may never adopt it.

The system may appear to offer something for everyone: touch-screen functionality for tablet enthusiasts, a slick new interface for the younger set, and multiple versions to make it compatible with traditional desktop PC software.

Many businesses, though, say there is no compelling reason to adopt. Indeed, a large number have yet to make the transition to Windows 7 from Windows XP.

“Windows 8 is, frankly, more of a consumer platform than it is a business platform, so it’s not something that makes any sense from a business perspective at this juncture,” said Doug Johnson, head of risk management policy at the American Bankers Association, whose members are among the world’s biggest technology buyers. “There is really no additional business functionality that Windows 8 gives you that I see.”

For most of the past two decades, that sort of comment about a new version of Windows might have set off panic in Microsoft’s Redmond, Washington, headquarters. Not now. Windows 8, in a stark reflection of how the technology business is changing, will rise or fall on how it is received in the consumer market.

That does not mean Microsoft executives are publicly saying they will not be going after enterprise customers with the radical new version of its flagship product.

“The lines between the consumer and the enterprise are blurring,” said Ron Markezich, head of Microsoft’s Enterprise & Partner Group. “Business customers are looking forward to Windows 8 because they don’t have to compromise between tablet and PC.”

But Microsoft’s main goal is to show it can master the new touch-optimized, mobile forms of computing pioneered by Apple Inc and Google Inc. Its colourful, action-packed advertising for the system are aimed at a young, free-wheeling audience, and its new Surface tablets are being positioned squarely as consumer devices.

Corporate customers have been lukewarm about the product even after test versions have been available for more than a year.

Car maker Volkswagen, which only last year moved 60,000 PCs onto Windows 7, is not planning to make another drastic shift anytime soon.

VW’s head of IT, Martin Eickhoff, said his team was “excited to evaluate the new tablet features” but would wait until Windows 8’s release to assess its potential benefits.

That’s not unusual, as corporations generally test a new system for 12-18 months before planning to adopt it, meaning enterprise take-up of most versions of Windows — except for the unpopular Vista — have only usually happened two or three years after launch.

This time even that pattern might not happen.

Michael Silver, an analyst at technology research firm Gartner, expects minimal corporate adoption over the life of the new system: “We believe 90 per cent of large organizations will not deploy Windows 8 broadly, and at its peak, we expect about 20 per cent of PCs in large organizations will run Windows 8,” he said.

This may not be a huge problem for Microsoft.

For one thing, the company gets 40 per cent of its overall revenue from multi-year licensing deals with enterprises — companies, government departments and universities — which typically give customers rights to the newest version of its software.

Essentially, Microsoft gets paid regardless of what version of Windows many big customers actually use.

And Windows is also declining in financial importance for Microsoft, although the sales of PCs often determine the strength of Microsoft’s earnings. Five years ago, it accounted for almost 30 per cent of Microsoft’s sales. Last year it was 25 per cent.

Microsoft’s success in selling to businesses, in the short term at least, depends less on Windows than on its Office products and its fast-growing server and tools division.

One institution that has made an early move to Windows 8 is Seton Hall University in New Jersey. The school has already deployed tablets and laptops running pre-release versions of Windows 8 to its freshman and junior classes — with help from Microsoft, which subsidized the effort with free consulting time.

“The benefit of the upgrade to Windows 8 for me is that it’s touch friendly. Lots of the devices that we have in the community could benefit,” said Stephen Landry, Seton Hall’s chief information officer.

Landry said his students overwhelmingly liked the new system, after a brief training session, but he acknowledged that many of his peers in higher education were not ready to move so fast.

“Talking to a lot of CIOs, they are not ready to jump into Windows 8 with both feet yet. They are taking a wait-and-see attitude. They are thinking ‘That’s a lot of work, I need to upgrade System Center (Microsoft’s IT management platform), I need to have a little different process for managing the back end.’ A lot of CIOs I’ve talked to, they are saying I’m not really seeing a benefit.”

Steven Hanna, chief information officer of Kennametal Inc, an industrial parts and tools manufacturer based in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, said his company has only just moved onto Windows 7, and has no plans to introduce Windows 8 broadly in the near future. But he may deploy it selectively for employees who can make use of the touch-screen, such as travelling sales reps.

“The mobility for the sales force, to put all the material and the ability to do basic transactions in their hands, is going to be a phenomenal driver for us,” said Hanna. “We’re doing some piloting with iPads, but I’m excited to see the Windows stuff come out.”

This appears to be the most likely route for Windows 8 into the workplace. But even this will not be simple because Windows 8 is really two operating systems.

The standard Windows 8 for devices with Intel Corp x86 chips will run old Microsoft applications and generally fit seamlessly into companies’ networks and security systems, just like any Windows PC. But Windows RT, the version for devices powered by ARM Holdings chips — such as Microsoft’s new Surface tablet — will not run legacy applications and require more work to integrate.

Even as it launches Windows 8, a key priority for Microsoft is to get customers off the decade-old Windows XP — which still runs on 41 per cent of the world’s 1.5 billion PCs. For the last three years, it has urged enterprise customers to move to Windows 7, and it has said it does not expect organizations to drop those plans because of Windows 8.

That effectively means many companies will downgrade new PCs to run on Windows 7, not 8, over the next few years.

But if people start bringing Microsoft’s new Surface tablet to work, or any of the other new Windows 8 devices, Microsoft is hoping corporate IT managers will welcome them with open arms.

“Some organizations, when they look at Windows 8 Intel tablets, they are going to like them because they are manageable,” said Michael Cherry, an analyst at Directions on Microsoft, an independent consultancy that helps customers understand the company. “When they look at RT they are going to be disappointed, because it’s no easier to manage than an iPad.” — Reuters

iPad Mini : Apple Store Goes Down Ahead

Like clockwork, Apple’s online store went down Tuesday morning ahead of the iPad Mini event scheduled for later in the day.

Apple typically takes the online store down a few hours before its launch events in order to add new products into the system. It’s also become an event in and of itself that proves once and for all to Apple watchers that new products are coming.

Aside from introducing a smaller iPad, Apple is also expected to unveil a new 13-inch MacBook Retina Pro as well as announce updates to iTunes and iBooks

The Apple event is scheduled to take place Tuesday at 1pm ET at the California Theatre in San Jose. The online store should go back up shortly after the event is over.

Samsung Galaxy Note II Will Hit Just For $299?

It’s no secret that all five major U.S. carriers will sell the second-generation Samsung phablet, but they seem to have their very own launch strategies. Thus far, Sprint and AT&T are the only carriers to throw out specific dates, while T-Mobile has merely said the phone will launch this “fall.”

(Though, recent reports seem to confirm a T-Mobile launch as soon as tomorrow.)

As far as pricing goes, there are no surprises here. Just like Sprint’s Galaxy Note II (and presumably every other on-contract version), AT&T will be selling the Samsung Galaxy Note II for $299.99 with a two-year agreement.

In the specs department, nothing has been updated from what we heard at the phone’s announcement at IFA in Berlin. We’re still looking at a 1.6GHz quad-core Exynos proc, 2GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel shooter, and last but not least, a brand new S-Pen stylus thingy.

The display weighs in just a tad larger than its predecessors’, at 5.5 inches of Super AMOLED awesomeness. And of course, this phone will be readily equipped with a 4G LTE radio to take advantage of AT&T’s new LTE network.

According to the release, AT&T is the only carrier dropping the price of the original Galaxy Note from $299 with-contract to $199.

Windows 8 new favorite could be lucky number 8

Our test bed is a Dell XPS desktop, running a 3.2GHz Core i7 processor, with 8 GB of DDR3 RAM, a Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS PCI-Express with 512 MB RAM graphics card, and a 1 TB Western Digital hard drive (model WDC3200AAKS).

We tested Windows 7 Service Pack 1 twice, and Windows 8 RTM twice. The second time we tested Windows 8, we updated the operating system because Microsoft claimed that the update was a big improvement to the OS. We conducted the "Wake from Sleep" test only once on Windows 7 because of its recent addition to our benchmark tests.

A word of caution about these benchmarks: They provide a snapshot of how our specific test hardware performs under strictly controlled conditions. They are not always representative of actual real-world performance.

We excluded our new "wake from sleep" test from the chart because the results were erratic. The second Windows 8 "wake from sleep mode" test gave us an average of 17 seconds, significantly slower than our experience with a real-world Windows 7 computer running Windows 8. My Toshiba DX1215 all-in-one touch screen, running the Windows 8 RTM with all the updates, regularly wakes from sleep in under two seconds. That's a major win for Microsoft, even if our Windows 7 hardware running Windows 8 resulted in erratic tests.

Nevertheless, you can see that the Windows 8 RTM from August and the big October update to Windows 8 proved to boot significantly faster than Windows 7 Service Pack 1. Boot time shrunk by around 45 percent between Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8 RTM updated, and that's a key metric in making Windows 8 appealing.

Claims about sluggishness in Windows will be slightly harder to prove in Windows 8. Our in-use performance tests were fairly even, which CNET Labs explained to me as being because the tests have not been optimized to run on Windows 8. However, the Microsoft Office performance test shows Windows 7 taking around 410 seconds to complete its tasks, to around 370 seconds in Windows 8 -- about 10 percent faster.

Shutdown times in the lab were recorded at about the same speed for both Windows 7 and Windows 8, which parallels my real-world experience. Windows 7 SP1 has never been beastly for me when shutting down, although that hasn't been the case for everybody.

So, what we can conclude from all these lab tests is that on the key metric of how long it takes you to get going on your computer, Windows 8 lives up to its promise. But as always, your personal configuration could greatly affect your device's performance.-Cnet

History of amphibious cars

Unveiled commercially this week, Gibbs Sport Quadski may be the first vehicle available to consumers that is as fast across the water as it is on land, but it is by no means the first amphibious vehicle. We take a look at some of the most interesting and unusual aquatic cars.

The Swiss-designed Rinspeed Splash. — AFP pics
The Amphicar

The car that invented the market segment, the German-built Amphicar went on sale in 1961. Capable of 7 knots (over 12kph) on water and 112kph across land, it enjoyed modest popularity — it is estimated that 3,878 cars were sold before the company went under — but has become more of a cult collector’s item with each passing year.

Argocat Avenger 8x8

Launched in 1995, It might look like a toy but this 674cc 26-or-31 horespower vehicle can carry over 500kg and tow another 800kg at up to 35kph on land and, because it has permanent 16-wheel drive, it can handle the most challenging of terrain, water included. The combination of 16 permanently spinning ribbed tires with a hull made from polyethylene means that the Argocat not only floats but is capable of 4kph on water. There’s even a fitting for an optional outboard motor that will increase the speed to 16kph for those in more of a hurry.

Rinspeed Splash

This Swiss car design and modification company has been producing incredibly innovative and incredibly expensive cars since 1977. In 2004, it revealed the Splash. Built from carbon fibre composites, it was powered by a turbocharged compressed natural gas engine giving it a top speed of 200kph on land. When on water it could be driven as a ‘normal’ amphibious vehicle and achieve 50kph or 28 knots, or, with the touch of a button it could convert into a hydrofoil and achieve a top speed closer to 80kph (approx. 45 knots).

Gibbs Aquatic

Developed in 2003 by the same company that has just launched the Quadski, the Aquatic stood out because it was designed from the ground up to be both a boat and a car, rather than adapting an existing vehicle to do another vehicle’s job. Capable of a fast and responsive 26 knots on water, the Aquatic set a new world record when Virgin’s Richard Branson drove one across the channel in 1 hour and 40 minutes, beating the existing record by 4 hours and 20 minutes. Unfortunately it never went into production. Rover, the engine supplier went under, while US safety laws regarding features such as airbags made sure it never went on sale.

The hovercraft appears to be the perfect all-terrain vehicle, equally adept on land and sea.

Rinspeed sQuba

Flushed with the success of the Splash concept, in 2008 Rinspeed debuted the sQuba, a battery-powered sports car, inspired by James Bond and designed to look like a Lotus Elise that can be driven underwater to depths below 10 meters and could be driven without a driver — thanks to an ingenious laser scanning and tracking system — on the road.

Icelandic extreme 4x4s

Some companies invest millions trying to make a car work on land and at sea while others discover by accident that their heavily modified racing off-roaders can also drive across the water. The lightweight frames, coupled with heavy-duty ridged tires mean that Icelandic extreme 4x4s are equally adept on water, however, only when the wheels are spinning. If the engine stops, the car sinks.

Hovercraft

At first glance the hovercraft would appear to be the perfect all-terrain vehicle, equally adept on land and on sea and, while they are incredibly fast in a straight line, they are not renowned for their responsiveness or their ability to corner accurately at speed. Braking is also a problem. The vehicle will stop but the driver tends to continue on forward trajectory.  — AFP

Ways To Make Money Online Easily

Recently someone gave me feedback about one of the ads on my blog. The feedback was very pertinent, saying that the ad looked "scammish" and gave a bad impression of my blog. The ad was about some easy way to make online $2000-$3000 a week.

Unfortunately we all know that there is no magic bullet to make this kind of money. However, I believe that there are a lot of real opportunities online to make a few bucks here and there. Again no shortcuts to becoming a millionaire, but realistic ways to make a bit of cash quickly.

Android malware, FUD, and the FBI

The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), a U.S. government task force made up of the FBI and the National White Collar Crime Center, recently issued an Android malware warning. This has been taken by some to be yet more proof of how insecure Android is compared to Apple's iOS. Please. Give me a break.

All the IC3's badly written, vague release really said was that: "The IC3 has been made aware of various malware attacking Android operating systems for mobile devices. Some of the latest known versions of this type of malware are Loozfon and FinFisher." And, what are these?

Loozlon is a Trojan horse that Symantec reports as having less than 50 reported instances. FinFisher is a much more serious spyware program.

FinFisher has been around for years on Macs and Windows PCs as "legal" spyware from Gamma International, a UK security company. Recently it's been ported to all the major mobile devices, including Android, Blackberry, and, yes, the iPhone. It is in no way, shape, or form purely an Android problem.

In any case, both programs aren't classic computer viruses. They require users to go above and beyond the call of stupidity to catch them.

With both, you typically need to open a suspicious looking email, then follow a link, and then agree, in Android's case, to download the unknown Android application package (APK). After that, you have to tell your smartphone or tablet to install it even though it's not in Google's Play Store, ignore the malware warning, and then you finally get to infect your device.

In short, these malicious programs don't really infect devices. Maliciously stupid users do. Or, in the case of FinFisher, it might be your employer or your government.

The real problem with Android security though isn't malware that requires a fool's active co-operation. No, the true trouble is that Google still doesn't do anything like enough checking of applications for security risks before it lets them go on the Google Play Store. This is one thing that Apple does do better with its app store than Google does.

The good news is that Google finally seems to be getting it act together in stopping these real threats. According to a report, Google will soon be integrating a malware scanner in the Google Play application store. Neither Google, nor anyone else, can stop fools from being fools, but the search giant is finally working more seriously on solving Android's real security problems.

4 ways to increase font size in Facebook

Any people complain that the font size of Facebook is quite too small compared to the other websites. Here are four ways to increase the font size of Facebook. Although there can be many other ways of doing this, I’m just covering the basic ones that can be used.

Browsers’ native zoom option
Browsers provide option to modify the view size. Use (Ctrl and +) key or (Ctrl + Mouse scroll up) to increase the text size. You can use (Ctrl and -) key or (Ctrl + Mouse scroll down) to reduce the font size. Although this method is simple, it has some drawbacks, along with the font the whole size will be increased thus breaking the layout.

Browser’s Font settings
Almost every major browser provides an option to set ‘minimum font-size‘. You can customize this option to increase the font size all all webpages. In case of Firefox, you should choose ‘Preferences->Content->Advanced (Fonts & Colors)->Minimum Font size‘.

In case of Google chrome select ‘Settings->(Show Advanced Settings)->Web content->Customize Fonts->Minimum font size‘.

Developer Tools
Developer tools have option to edit the style of the webpages directly. Select mostly the body part and edit the font size in their style editor This is not an easy method for newbies, however it gives you much control over the layout.

Third party Addon / Plugin
You can alternatively install third party tools which does the job of modifying the font size. They in turn use the browser’s native support, but they provide you with better options such as configuring the font / zoom size for each of the website. Beware in choosing the right addon and make sure they don’t gather data from your computer or do other malicious activities.

Change menu buttons in Ubuntu

One of the most annoying setting is the menu buttons such as minimize, maximize and close buttons are placed on the left side of the menu bar. As many may be aware that this setting can be changed by installing gconf-editor and setting the variable button_layout to ‘menu:minimize, maximize, close’ under ‘apps/metacity/general‘. This command fails to work in certain versions of Ubuntu which are using Unity.

Many of the settings in gconf-editor will become invalid and you will find those settings in dconf-editor. Incase if you don’t have dconf editor installed in your system, enter the following command in Linux Terminal.

sudo apt-get install dconf-tools
  1. Open dconf editor. (You can enter the command ‘dconf-editor‘ from the Linux terminal or choose dconf Editor from the Applications Menu under System Settings.
  2. Locate to the following directory path ‘org->gnome->desktop->wm->preferences‘.
  3. Change the variable ‘button_layout‘ to ‘menu: minimize, maximize, close‘

The change will take effect immediately after altering the value.

Alternatively you can type the following command in Linux terminal to do the same job.

Why Windows 8 Just Fine In The Work World

There are any number of good reasons why Windows 8 will do just fine in the work world. Today’s market, success is not guaranteed, especially as PC sales continue to slide.

Even with the poor market for PCs, the outlook for Windows 8 looks positive in the enterprise.

  • It’s time for enterprise customers to do a refresh from the still widely used Office 2003.
  • Windows 8 represents the consumerization of IT in a package that the CIO understands.
  • Microsoft got the user experience right with the tiles and the Metro-style UI.
  • Windows 8 represents one platform that is available across multiple screens — desktop, mobile, ultrabooks, etc.
  • It’s like chasing cats trying to manage cloud best of breed hell – you still need a corporate standard. Windows 8 fits the bill.
  • Legacy apps will work on Windows 8, making the transition to the new operating system relatively simple.
  • It is inconsequential that Microsoft is not the most far out in front innovator. Over time, the enterprise that adopts Windows 8 will catch up to market innovation.
  • The CIO can consolidate under Windows 8.
  • The Surface, which runs Windows 8 RT, doubles as a laptop. It’s ready for the knowledge worker to do the day-to-day work that needs to get done.
  • Windows 8 has built-in mobile device management and security, making it enterprise class.
Big business has good reason to adopt Windows 8. But small and medium-sized businesses are far better off, in my opinion, of not adopting Windows 8. Their choices are just too numerous. They have their choice of platforms such as Google Apps or Zoho. They can use Dropbox or Box for keeping documents in one place.

Big business has the option, too, of using the rich array of available apps and services. And they will do so as long as technology continues to get more affordable and easy to create. That’s inevitable. High speed networking is getting ever less expensive; storage is getting more sophisticated with the advent of solid state disk and flash; memory is doubling and the computing capabilities on clients, servers and elastic infrastructures has leaped over the past few years. That means faster apps, with loads of data that do not require an operating system to keep running. That is, unless we are talking about mobile, which now has three dominant operating systems: iOS, Android and Windows.

Tips To Help You Enter The U.S. Market

Selling to the U.S. market can be a significant milestone in the life of an international technology startup. The U.S. is the largest market in the world, and a successful foothold here can mean dramatic growth as well as further credibility of your company. But selling to U.S. businesses can be difficult especially if you’re based overseas. Having successfully introduced international technology companies to the U.S. market, we’ve learned several lessons, listed below, to help companies abroad sell in the U.S.

Find markets that are not yet saturated by your competitors.
U.S. competitors will have a geographic advantage, so pick an industry vertical, or regional market, where you can introduce your product and gain rapid traction.

Identify Early Market Signals.
Track early signals that the U.S. market is even interested in your product or service. Do you have signups on your website or requests for information from U.S. customers already? Set up a U.S. page where customers can sign up to be on a waiting list and run a basic online marketing campaign to promote it. If you see interest in your product or service from the U.S. market, you know there’s an opportunity to push further into the market.

Experiment with pricing, but don’t get caught up in a price war.
International companies often differentiate themselves from U.S. competitors by offering similar technology at a lower price. However, cheaper doesn’t always compute as better; many customers associate a lower price point with lower quality. So rather than racing your competitor to the lowest possible price point, pitch your product as providing a superior solution at a price that can actually support the growth of your company.

Get introductions from your existing clients.
Many of your customers may already operate in the U.S. and have industry contacts that could also benefit from your product or service. Ask them for introductions to new customers. Tell them you’re entering a new market, and as a long term or successful client, you’d appreciate a connection with any industry contacts that would also benefit from your solution. Asking your existing customers is an easy way to find early adopters in new markets, but a tactic that many businesses simply fail to do.

Facebook’s First Server Cost $85/Month

At Startup School today in the Memorial Auditorium at Stanford University, Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg spoke to Y Combinator founder Paul Graham about the early days of Facebook. He revealed that, early on, the team did not intend for the TheFacebook.com (as it was called) to become a business.

In fact, being at Harvard and all, Facebook had no cash to run the business and operated it for the first few months for $85/month, which was the cost of renting one server. Facebook’s first server.

But how did Facebook support its early operations and pay for these wildly expensive servers? Banner ads! Yes, banner ads. As Zuck mentioned in the interview, it was (co-founder) Eduardo Saverin’s job early on to find ads for Facebook to use, as AdSense had just been released, for example. TheFacebook.com had a network of banner ads, but as Zuck implies, they really weren’t making any money. Just enough to pay for those $85 servers.

Facebook, as the story goes, it took about a year for Facebook to reach its first million users. For most, that would be considered speedy expansion, but Zuckerberg implied that (humorously enough) the early constraints on Facebook’s scaling were having to pay for those first servers. Apparently, $85 didn’t come so easy back then.

In terms of expansion, Zuckerberg told the audience the reason the co-founders chose Yale, Stanford and Columbia as the first schools at which they’d launch Facebook, was because they knew it would be tough to succeed at those schools. That was because those three schools already had some kind of simple student social network already established.

Introduction For Blogger & Adsense

If you've been thinking about monetizing your blog and are unfamiliar with how Google AdSense works, here are the three things you need to know:

1. AdSense is built into Blogger:
You can easily sign up and start showing ads on your blog, without having to leave Blogger, by clicking on the "Earnings" tab in your dashboard. After completing the AdSense application, the next step is to designate where you want the ads to appear on your blog. Once your application is approved, we’ll start serving ads and you’ll start making money. And unlike many other blogging platforms, Blogger doesn’t take a cut of your revenue.

2. AdSense serves relevant ads on your blogs:
AdSense works by matching text and image ads to your blog based on your content and the types of users that visit your site. For example, if you write about running, your readers may see ads next to your post about running shoes and equipment. Ads are created and paid for by advertisers who want to promote their products.

3. Great content is key:
Posting high quality content is the best way to maximize your returns with AdSense. It’s important to take a little extra time defining your topic, creating a post that is engaging and matters to your readers. The more interesting and appealing your content is, the more likely your readers will be to click on the ads on your blog.

This short video will also give you a quick overview of AdSense and how it works with Blogger:

Share your posts to Google+

Two of the biggest challenges we hear from bloggers are finding new followers, and engaging in a dialogue with their readers. By sharing your post to Google+, you enable an entirely new group of people to find and follow you. When you upgrade your blog to connect with Google+, the authorship information on your blog will reflect your common name as listed on your Google+ profile. You can then choose to associate certain blogs with a Page, or certain blogs with your profile. This association determines to which streams the posts will be shared once they're published.

When you publish a post, a pre-filled share box will be displayed. Select the circles that you wish to share with, add a custom message if you like, and click “Share.” Your post will then appear in either your Page or Profile’s (depending on which you’ve chosen for that specific blog) Google+ stream, as well as in the streams of those you’ve shared with.

Here’s how to get started:

This sharing option, along with future Blogger and Google+ integrations, is available to users who have linked their Google+ profile or Google+ page to their blogs so that they can blog and share to Google+ under the same common name.

To associate your blog with your Google+ page or profile, click the Google+ tab to get started.

Once you associate your blog with Google+, go ahead and write your post. After you hit Publish, you’ll see a share box inviting you to share your post with your circles on Google+. Note that the default circle is set to “Public,” but that you can modify your circles every time you choose to share.

If you don't want the share box to pop up after publishing a post, you can change the settings by going to the Google+ tab in Blogger and unchecking the check box at the bottom.

If you only want to share posts sometimes but don’t want to constantly change the setting, or if you want to retroactively share posts, you can use the “Share” option on your Posts page. Just hover over the post to view the option.

Ways to share your blog with the world

Built with the latest in web technology (AJAX, HTML5 and CSS3), Dynamic Views is a unique browsing experience that will inspire your readers to explore your blog in new ways. The interactive layouts make it easier for readers to enjoy and discover your posts, loading 40 percent faster than traditional templates and bringing older entries to the surface so they seem fresh again.

Dynamic Views is much more than just new templates. With just a couple clicks, you’ll get infinite scrolling (say goodbye to the “Older posts” link), images that load as you browse, integrated search, sorting by date, label and author, lightbox-style posts for easy viewing, keyboard shortcuts for quickly flipping through posts, and one-click sharing to Google+ and other social sites on every post.

No two blogs are the same, so you can choose from seven different views that display text and photos differently. For example, if you have lots of photos on your blog, you may prefer Flipcard or Snapshot. If your blog is more text-heavy, then Classic, Sidebar (what you’re seeing now on Blogger Buzz) or Timeslide may be preferable. Here’s a quick description of each of the new views, along with links to some of our favorite blogs where you can check each of them out in action.

  1. Classic (Gmail): A modern twist on a traditional template, with infinite scrolling and images that load as you go
  2. Flipcard (M loves M) - Your photos are tiled across the page and flip to reveal the post title
  3. Magazine (Advanced Style) - A clean, elegant editorial style layout
  4. Mosaic (Crosby’s Kitchen) - A mosaic mix of different sized images and text
  5. Sidebar (Blogger Buzz Blog) - An email inbox-like view with a reading page for quick scrolling and browsing
  6. Snapshot (Canelle et Vanille) - An interactive pinboard of your posts
  7. Timeslide (The Bleary-Eyed Father) - A horizontal view of your posts by time period

Tips for New Bloggers

I had no idea that a blog about my clothing choices would grow and become such a fun hobby! And even though I’ve been blogging for a little while, I still feel like I have so much to learn, which is what keeps blogging interesting! So, while I'm definitely far from being an expert, here are a few things that have worked for me:

1) Find a community of bloggers with similar interests. Do you like to write about video games, fashion, cooking? There are lots of great blogs on those topics already. A quick Google search for “fashion blogs” helped me round out my reading list. I always check out the blog rolls of people whose blogs I enjoy, and I also visit the blogs of folks who comment on my blog. Bottom line: interact with bloggers whose blogs you enjoy. You'll learn so much, I promise. This leads me to my next point...

2) Leave insightful comments on blogs that you enjoy - especially blogs that are in the same niche as you. Instead of just saying, "hey, nice blog, follow me please”, call out something specific that you liked about the post. Pure "followback" requests don’t really make people want to follow you.

3) Don't underestimate the importance of good pictures on your posts. The basics: Use a tripod or get a friend to photograph you if the pictures are of you. Take pictures outdoors if possible because natural light always makes pictures look better. Use post-processing (I use Picnik) to adjust the exposure, add effects, and crop to keep the focus on what you want. You don’t need a fancy camera - I use my cell phone most of the time! I wrote about this in more depth here.

4) Think about quality, rather than quantity of posts. Readers would rather see an insightful (and spell-checked!) post with original content and good pictures 2-4 times a week than hastily-written thoughts on a daily basis. Most avid blog readers follow so many blogs that if you post too often, and especially if your posts aren't high quality, you'll get passed over in favor of the other blogs on their blogroll. Plus, a great, high-quality post can continue to get you traffic for a few days - don't truncate its effectiveness by posting again the very next day.

5) Schedule your posts. I typically have a chunk of time on the weekend where I can plan out and write my 2-4 posts for the week, or at least get a rough draft in place. Blogger allows you to schedule your posts and they will automatically publish at the date/time you specify. I typically set my posts to publish around 2am to capture folks in other time zones.
